About Cookies

Cookies explained
A cookie is a block of text up to 255 characters in length that is sent to your browser from a World Wide Web site. Cookies provide a safe means for sites to pass information to a user's desktop while protecting the security of the user.

Sometimes you'll see a pop up box asking if you would like to 'accept the cookie'. You must answer 'yes' to continue. If you don't, you will receive the same question again and not be able to go any further.

There are different types of cookies.

  • Persistent (or permanent) cookies store text in a file on an individual’s hard drive. Persistent cookies are used to record your individual preferences. For example, some sites use cookies to allow users to customise the appearance of the site. They may also be used by site developers to help work out which areas are most popular and which are less useful.
  • Session (or non-persistent) cookies do not record data in a cookie text file. The information is stored temporarily in memory and is eliminated once the session is finished. In a secure site such as our website, a session cookie will remember an individual's session, letting you move in and out of the site without having to log on again.

A cookie cannot be used to get data from your hard drive, get your e-mail address or access sensitive information about you as an individual. Cookies must meet strict specifications to ensure that they are not used to compromise security.

Turning off cookies
If you should use the feature on your browser which turns off accepting cookies, you will get an alert message each time the website tries to access cookies during your session. The alert box may pop up many times during your browser session. You will need to accept these session cookies in order to use the Barclays Stockbroker dealing site, so just disable this feature on your browser when you log in.
