An exciting way to diversify your portfolio

A CFD is your agreement with Barclays Stockbrokers CFDs to exchange the difference between opening and closing prices when the contract ends. You’re not buying / selling rights to the underlying assets, but speculating on the movement of a share, a sector or a market. Some points to note are:

  • Profits from CFDs are subject to UK capital gains tax and losses are off-settable against tax
  • CFD prices mirror the market price for the underlying holding with an explicit commission charge deducted from the account. You can even carry long positions overnight for a small additional charge
  • CFDs greatly amplify your profit potential because you deposit as little as 2% of the value of the underlying holding. Please remember though that potential losses can also be greater and you may need to deposit more funds to maintain your position. CFD trading is not suitable for all investors.

Choose the right account for you

We offer two types of CFD trading accounts – a Standard account and a Limited Risk account.

The Limited Risk Account is suitable for those with less appetite for risk. You are required to deposit sufficient funds to cover the maximum possible loss before you are able to trade. This requires you to place a Guaranteed Stop Loss order (for which you will be charged a fee) each time you open a position. You choose the price at which your bet will be closed should the market move against you and we guarantee that your bet will be closed.

The Limited Risk Account limits access to a narrower range of more liquid markets than a Standard Account and imposes a maximum bet size for all positions in your account.

With a Standard Account the amount that you deposit will determine the size of the margin requirement for any bet. Please note that the margin requirement is a percentage of your total financial liability relating to your bet.

If your positions move against you, you may need to make a margin payment to maintain your position. This is because in addition to the initial margin required to create the position, you must also meet the full value of all running losses from your positions. You have the option to place a Guaranteed Stop loss order (for which you will be charged a fee) on more liquid markets.

With a Standard Account it is possible to lose more than your initial investment.

Before you open a CFD Trading account we recommend you thoroughly read and understand our Terms and Policies, Market Information Sheets and Risk Warning Notice.
