Volatility can be unsettling for investors, and when markets are bumpy some may prefer to sit tight rather than trade. However, it's important to remember that it also provides opportunities. As JFK memorably pointed out, the Chinese character for crisis comprises two elements: danger and opportunity. Translated into trading terms, there is a short-term opportunity to take advantage of market swings.
The opportunities for the more experienced investor
- Trading activity
With CFDs and spreadbetting you can speculate on the movement of a share, index, currency or sector – the greater the movement, the greater the potential profit. However, CFDs and Financial Spread Trading (FST) are not for everyone. They are margin products and carry higher risks for the potential of higher rewards and you can lose more than you deposit. - Gearing
When markets are moving you can capitalise on upward movements through gearing – you can access this with Investment Notes, and with margin products such as CFDs and Financial Spread Trading. Be aware gearing in CFDs and FSTs magnifies losses as well as gains. if you’re using geared products, it makes sense to have downside protection too: funds can be used to spread risk through diversification. Some Investment Notes offer you your capital back at maturity, but if you sell early you can lose. - Bargain hunting
Understanding the technical and fundamental aspects of markets will help you spot a bargain – our research tools make it easier. - Strategic Tools
We offer a range of advanced order types, including Stop Orders and Trailing Stop Orders that can help to protect your capital if a share price falls. And you can combine order types to help protect your holding – whichever way the market moves.
